Orillia is located on Lake Couchiching about 135 miles north of Toronto. Lake Couchiching is named by the Ojibwe, meaning "Inlet" and is attached to Lake Simcoe by a small channel. The Trent canal is located here and joins Lake Simcoe to Georgian Bay. The name "Orillia" is thought to orginate with the Spanish and is backed in theory by the Spanish name for Oro township. The largest employer in the Orillia area is the Casino Rama, located in the nearby Mnjikaning First Nation. Another large presence is the Ontario Provincial Police headquarters which has chosen Orillia as its base of operations. The large mental health facility is being closed by the Provincial government and many people think that a College or University is waiting in the wings to snap up the property to use as their campus.
