Insulation Defect Pictures
Insulation defects can result in heat loss, higher energy costs, uncomfortable living areas and condensation problems. Missing, damaged or poorly installed insulation is commonly found in attics, walls and other areas of the home. The following pictures show insulation defects found during home inspections in Barrie and surrounding areas.
Attic Insulation Defects

Mould growth is visible on the roof sheathing near the attic eaves. This condition is commonly associated with excess attic moisture and inadequate ventilation, particularly when soffit ventilation is blocked by insulation. The source of the moisture should be identified and corrected before the affected area is properly treated.
Animal feces are present in the attic insulation, indicating current or previous pest activity. Contaminated insulation may require removal and replacement, and possible entry points should be located and properly sealed to help prevent animals from re-entering the attic.
Missing and Damaged Insulation

The attic access hatch is missing insulation, creating a significant area of heat loss between the living space and attic. Attic hatches should be insulated and weather-stripped to provide a continuous thermal and air barrier when closed.
A bird nest is present in the attic insulation, indicating that birds have gained access to the attic space. Nesting materials and droppings can contaminate insulation, and entry openings should be located and properly sealed after the birds have been safely removed.
Electrical Floor Heating & Fireplace Vent

This thermal image shows the heating cable pattern beneath a bathroom floor. Thermal imaging allows the operation of electric in-floor heating to be quickly checked without disturbing the finished flooring and can help identify areas where heating cables may be damaged or not operating properly.

The B-vent serving this gas fireplace has a poor connection at the ceiling. Vent connections must be properly secured and installed to maintain a continuous venting system for combustion gases. Loose or improperly connected venting can allow combustion products, including carbon monoxide, to enter the home and should be repaired by a qualified technician.
Attic Ventilation Defects

This bathroom exhaust fan is venting directly into the attic instead of to the exterior. Warm, moisture-laden air released into the attic can contribute to condensation, mould growth and deterioration of the roof sheathing. Bathroom exhaust ducts should terminate at a properly installed exterior vent.
Turbine vents were commonly installed to provide attic ventilation but are less frequently used by many roofing contractors today. Wind-driven rain and snow can enter through some turbine vents, potentially introducing moisture into the attic. Modern static or ridge ventilation systems are often used as alternatives.
