WETT Inspection Defect Pictures

WETT inspection defect pictures show many of the common problems found with wood stoves, fireplaces, chimneys and flue-pipe installations. These photographs are examples of actual conditions found during inspections, including damaged components, improper installations, clearance concerns and deterioration that may affect the safe operation of a wood-burning system.

Common WETT Inspection Defects

WETT inspections can identify defects and installation conditions that may affect the safe operation of a wood-burning system. Common concerns include damaged chimney components, improper flue-pipe installations, inadequate clearances to combustible materials, insufficient floor protection and deterioration caused by heat, moisture or age.

The photographs below show examples of defects and conditions found during actual inspections.

Cracks in Brick Chimney

Masonry chimney has cracked and spalled brick structure.  No chimney cap which allows moisture entry and resulted in deterioration.

Older style metal chimney used for wood stove is no longer acceptable for use.  Wood stove chimneys have to meet ULC S-629 standards

Flue Pipe Defects

Clay flue Tile is cracked and finish is spalling.  Flue tile requires replacement and chimney cap may require removal and repair.

Interior clay flue tile is cracked.  Options are to rebuild damaged section of chimeny or install stainless steel liner.

Floor Protection Defects

Un-certified Stove Floor Protection Requirements.
Manufactured Hearth Pads

Un-certified Wood Stoves require specific floor protection based on height of stove legs.  This is also based on specific heat protection requirements using specific heat reduction materials under stove.

ULC Rated Hearth Pads are available form various companies.  Custom sizes are available to suit your stoves requirements.   They provide ember pad and floor protection requirements of most newer stoves.

Appliance Defects

Small cracks under 4 mm can be ignored.  Fire brick Missing pieces that expose the stove body must be replaced. Smaller cracks can be repaired using refractory mortar or Fire Cement

You should never use wood stove with a cracked glass in door.  Only Replace with ceramic wood stove glass, which is rated to with stand high temperatures.  Most manufactures offer replacement glass.
