WETT Inspection Tips Barrie
A little preparation before a WETT inspection can make the inspection process easier and help homeowners understand what will be examined. Wood-burning appliances and their venting systems should be accessible so the visible components of the installation can be inspected, including the appliance, floor protection, flue pipe and chimney system.
Preparing for Your WETT Inspection
Before the WETT inspector arrives, make sure the wood-burning appliance and surrounding area can be easily accessed. Remove items stored around the stove or fireplace and provide access to visible portions of the flue pipe and chimney system. If you have the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions or other documentation available, keep them handy for the inspection.
Ensure all flue pipe screws have been re-installed if you have had chimney cleaned recently.
Make the Wood-Burning System Accessible
The inspector needs clear access to the visible components of the wood-burning system. Furniture, firewood and stored items should be moved away from the appliance so the stove or fireplace, floor protection, flue pipe and surrounding combustible materials can be examined. Access to the chimney and other visible components should also be available wherever practical.
Check Floor Protection and Clearances
Take a look around the wood-burning appliance before the inspection for anything that may affect required clearances. Furniture, firewood and other combustible materials should not be stored close to the appliance or flue pipe. The floor protection should also be visible and unobstructed so its size, construction and condition can be examined.
Look at the Flue Pipe and Chimney
Visible flue pipe and chimney components should be accessible for the inspection. The inspector will examine accessible connections, joints, clearances and the general condition of the venting system. Damage, corrosion, deterioration or installation concerns observed during the inspection will be documented in the report.
Common Problems Found During WETT Inspections
Many WETT inspection concerns involve installation details that may
not be obvious to the homeowner. Common findings can include inadequate clearances to combustible materials, damaged or deteriorated components, improper flue-pipe installations, insufficient floor protection and concerns with chimney components.
If you have a Fireplace Insert you are required to have a stainless steel liner installed. This can be quickly verified by looking at exterior of chimney and there will be a visible metal liner and cap installed.
You can call Roger to discuss any questions you may have prior to booking a WETT Inspection. Many questions can be easily answered especially if you supply a text picture which identifies your area of concern.
