What is Asbestos

Asbestos is the generic name for 6 different naturally-occurring fibrous minerals. A “fibre” is defined as a particle that is more than 5 micrometres (μm) in length and having a length to width ratio of at least 3:1. Many Canadian regulations further add that a fibre of asbestos must also be less than 3 μm wide.

Based on their physical and chemical properties, there are two major groups of asbestos: serpentine and amphibole.

Serpentine: Serpentine fibres are long, flexible and curved. These fibres can be woven together. The main type of serpentine asbestos is chrysotile (white asbestos), which is the main type of asbestos used in manufacturing.

Amphiobole: Amphibole fibres are straight and stiff. These fibres are generally brittle and rod- or needle-shaped, which limits their commercial usefulness. There are 5 sub-types of amphiobole asbestos, including:

  • Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
  • Amosite (brown asbestos)
  • Actinolite
  • Anthophyllite
  • Tremolite

ASBESTOS SAMPLING

Bulk Samples

A bulk sample is a solid quantity of insulation, floor tile, building material, etc. suspected of containing asbestos fibers that will be analyzed for asbestos content and quantity.

Why You Need Vermiculite Insulation Removal Services

Vermiculite is a perfectly safe granular mineral. When heated, grains expand to up to thirty times their original size. Lightweight, fireproof and odorless, expanded vermiculite makes excellent insulation for homes and buildings.

Unfortunately, most of the vermiculite used in North America until 1990 came from a mine that also produced asbestos.  The Libby Mine located in Montana sold contaminated vermiculite insulation under many different names.  Unfortunately you can not tell if your insulation has asbestos unless inspected with a special microscope.

Asbestos is a hazard to health when the fibers are disturbed and become airborne. This means that asbestos poses health risks only when fibers are present in the air and then people breathe them into the lungs. Fibers can be released into the air when asbestos-containing products break down. This release can happen through deterioration or when the material is cut or disturbed.

Your Attic Insulation Could Be Contaminated With Asbestos

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if you have vermiculite insulation in your home or business building, you should assume it may be contaminated with asbestos and you must take steps to protect occupants from asbestos exposure.  Canada had the worst reputation for having a poor asbestos guidelines and practices dealing with Health Hazards among all the Industrialized nations.  This was partly due to the fact that until recently Quebec was mining Asbestos and still selling it to Third World Countries.

To prevent asbestos from contaminating your home, DO NOT disturb the insulation. Contact a professional removal specialist.
